Hey, there!
Wondering what RD-Mo is and how you can participate? You’re in luck.
Q: What is Rough Draft Month?
A: Rough Draft Month is a month dedicated to consistently working on a rough draft of a creative project. It is a self-imposed challenge to set aside time and prioritize creativity.
Q: When is Rough Draft Month?
A: Any month that you are able to dedicate time to a project can be a Rough Draft Month! We hope that our community can be an encouraging place year-round. However, November will be our most active month, as similar writing challenges have historically happened in November.
Q: How do I participate?
A: Choose a goal, write, and participate in our community events as you go! Throughout November, we’ll be sharing posts from community members, sending out emails with encouragement and writing craft talk, and chatting in our Discord server. Track your progress with us and participate in the community to the degree you feel comfortable.
Q: Is there a minimum word count goal?
A: No! While we’ll provide a few recommended goals and guidelines to help get you started, RD-Mo goals are meant to be flexible. Our tiered goal word counts are 30k, 50k, and 60k, but we also have guidance on how to set your own goals, including those for creative goals unrelated to writing.
Q: Why would you participate in a challenge like this?
A: Working on a large creative project like a novel can be a lonely process. Participating in group writing challenges can help root a part of your process in community, which can boost creativity overall. It can also be difficult to set aside time to work on creative projects. A writing challenge can give you the push you need to prioritize your creative goals. We also believe that the process and the work is just as important as the end result. Romanticizing and enjoying the process is the goal at the heart of RD-Mo.
